Type 8: The Compassionate Friend

You gravitate most towards the character of the Compassionate Friend.

The Compassionate Friend is the deepest part of who we are. The part that is whole. The part that knows he is deeply loved and lives out that love in hi actions and words.

How many times have you faced something that seemed impossible: something you battled with and cried over and prayed about until you clawed your way out of that wilderness until you found hope again? How many times have you faced insurmountable challenges that were matched with an insatiable hunger to find God in the midst of your pain? How many times did you feel dead inside, unable to take another step, but you took that step anyway?

The you that clung onto hope when your father died. The you that never thought you would survive when the one you loved walked out the door. The you that somehow found the sun after you lost your child. That is the deepest you. The Compassionate Friend. Those insurmountable challenges are what tenderly and carefully wore down the black soot that covered your heart. Every time you overcame one of those obstacles, the Compassionate Friend was strengthened in you. How could you not love such a strong soul?

The Compassionate Friend is who we want to access the most. He dwells the closest to God, and they partner together to bring healing to your inmost parts. The more we allow the Compassionate Friend to calm and quiet the other characters, the more freedom we will have.

Examples of the limitless self talk the Compassionate Friend Narrates:

-I don’t need to control these circumstances or this person. I let go of control.

-You did the best you could with what you had at the time.

-Don’t beat yourself up. You are precious and valuable beyond measure.

-We are all going through the human experience as a family. I will see the rest of humanity as equals and comrades. I choose compassion over being better or being right.

-I choose forgiveness.

-I will forgive reality. Then I will accept reality. Then I will embrace reality.

-Instead of running to addiction, I choose to delve deep into my soul to understand what I am trying to numb myself from.

-It’s wonderful and beautiful to serve others. It is equally wonderful and beautiful to rest.

-When given a choice, I will always choose love.

Redeemed Gift:

The more we access the Compassionate Friend, the more we bring the gift of our true self to the world. There is no one that can bring that beautiful gift except you.

The Path Toward Hope:

The Compassionate Friend is the wisest character inside of us. Healing will arise the more we allow him to be the default voice in our minds. Everything he does stems from his deep relationship with God. Choose to let the Compassionate Friend and God partner together narrate your life and write your script. Choose to reframe the story of your life until you see it as God sees it.

Inner Healing Assignment:

Write out a brief timeline of your life. Then write what God taught you in each season, and what you overcame. What strength did you find in yourself during that time? That strong person that has overcome so much is the Compassionate Friend. Put yourself in the third person and write a letter from the Compassionate Friend to the parts of you that are struggling right now. Can that deepest part of you partner with God to bring healing to the broken parts of you?

You are stronger than you think you are.

You, your hands dirtied with the soil where you till up the rocks of generations gone by. Your tears watering the ground, making the roots grow deep and wide while you are unaware. You labor, you dig, you claw this tiny piece of land where others buried their dreams and gave up trying.

But not you. You keep going. You never give up. You see the tree in the seed, and you will fight until that tree is standing before you, it's long willowing arms grasping your hope in its branches.

You are stronger than you think you are.

You, covered in all your scars. Where your face was grazed with false imaginings that you were not beautiful enough. Where your hands were caught in fields of cotton when you didn't believe you were free. Where you were marked across your chest the day you thought that they left because you weren't worth it. Look closely, love. Look closely because those scars are gilded with gold. Those scars have become your crown.

You are stronger than you think you are.

You, dancing there with your face against the wind. Not a pretty dance, but a wild dance. A hold on for dear life to the hope dance. An I will never stop believing in your goodness dance. A shake the sadness off your skin dance. You, with your feet pounding against the ground to the rhythm of your unsurrendering spirit. With your knees soiled and bleeding from the prayers and the longings and the times you almost gave up. With your arms thrown up in surrender and beckoning and awe. There is burning against your back as you lift up your face, because your wings are returning, love. Your wings are returning.

Look at me and believe now. You are stronger than you think you are. Stronger than you think you are.
